Summer Sundays hold a special place in the hearts of many, particularly within the Latine community. It's a day when traditions, cultures, and creativity intertwine to create moments of joy, connection, and reflection.
For many of us, summer reminds us of childhood, when we didn't have to worry about work or school. All we had to look forward to were things like visiting our native countries, attending the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City, dancing at summer block parties, and savoring the sizzle of carne asada cookouts. To this day, summer is still my favorite season of the year. It's the only time I get to significantly slow down, load up on self-care rituals, take in the warmer temperatures that my ancestors enjoyed year-round, and make more time for family and friends.
In our editorial package Como Celebramos, presented by Walmart, we delve into how Latines in the States celebrate their summer Sundays — from enjoying a caldero full of Dominican spaghetti at the beach to embracing Indigenous summer solstice rituals. Each story celebrates the diverse ways our communities honor their heritage. No matter how you choose to spend yours, Como Celebramos encourages readers to start approaching each Sunday with more intention and meaning, celebrating the richness of Latine culture all summer long — y con gusto!
